In Recognition of Black History Month

Written by Angela Kayira

Dr. Rima Vesely-Flad’s forthcoming book, The Fire Inside: The Dharma of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde illuminates the wisdom of two Black, queer luminaries through a dharmic lens, exploring how Baldwin and Lorde fostered skillful approaches to suffering as they sought to dismantle harmful conditions, expanding Buddhism’s timeless truths towards liberation and justice.

In a 2023 interview Vesley-Flad talks about the development of a course on the dharma of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde (which later became the Fire Inside).

I recently published a book called Black Buddhists and the Black Radical Tradition: The Practice of Stillness in the Movement for Liberation. In the sixth chapter, which is one on gender and sexuality, I engage Baldwin and Lorde. It’s really because there are three dharma teachers who write personally about their interpretations with Baldwin and Lorde, who all come from different Buddhist lineages. So I did a deep dive into these dharma teachers’ books, and coming out of writing that chapter, I thought, ‘I would like to teach a course on this and look at why these two writers are so compelling to these amazing dharma teachers.’

The Fire Inside dives deeply into a dharma of liberation as lived by Baldwin and Lorde, offering timely lessons to help us each meet this moment. She explores the writers’ enduring legacies to show that liberation depends not only on organizing and mass movements, but the generative power of inner well-being, authenticity, art, and embodiment.
