In April, 2023 Mountain Rain Zen Community opened our new practice space, Bright Stream Temple (Kōryūji in Japanese), the former location of the Vancouver Zen Centre. This development allowed us to offer the opportunity to deepen one’s Zen practice in a small residential community engaged with a larger lay practice community.

Our intention is for Bright Stream Temple and the Wall St. zendo to serve the larger sangha in complementary ways.

Residential practice extends through the rhythms of the day, including zazen, work practice in the house and garden, study, weekly meetings and personal commitments.

For the fall, we will not be offering a residential practice program per se, because we do not have the human resources to do such a program justice.

However, if experienced sangha members wish to spend shorter periods in residence they can contact guidingteachers@mountainrainzen.org. You would need to be responsible and self-motivated, able to cooperate with anyone else in residence to arrange a zazen schedule.

"Over-Nights": 1-3 nights for sangha members who are staying in order to participate in an event such as a retreat is also possible. Please note, this is not considered "included" in retreat fees.

We ask residents to commit to the precepts of right conduct and speech.

We aspire always to engage in respectful and caring communication and, when dealing with difference, letting best practices guide our discussions, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

Residencies are offered on an application and as-available basis. There is a $30 per night suggested contribution to the house.
