How to Edit the MRZC "Schedule Update" Block

The  Schedule Update Block is on the home page, below the address, in the "pre-footer" area. The default text reads:

Schedule Update: No changes to the schedule this week.

This text is accessed from the front, rather than the backend, but you must be logged in to edit it. After logging into the site:

  • Go to the home page and click View Page to view the page from the front
  • Find the SqSp control lozenge (lower right) and click on the pencil
  • Place your cursor over the line of text that you want to edit and click
  • Position the cursor after "Schedule Update: "
  • Edit, save, and check.
  • If by mistake you remove "Schedule Update:," just re-type it and make it bold. Bold text in that block will turn orange automagically.

Page Titles and Descriptions

Most page titles and descriptions, if any, are accessed for editing from the front, rather than the backend, but you must be logged in to edit them.

After logging into the site:

  • Go to the page whose title or short description (under the title) you want to edit.
    • Example: Teachings Archive
    • Notice that you don't see the page title or first paragraph from the backend.
  • Click View Page to view the page from the front
  • Find the SqSp control lozenge (lower right) and click on the pencil
  • Place your cursor over the line of text that you want to edit and click
  • Edit, save, and check.

Styling Text

For consistency across the site, use the options in the Text Block Editor bar to style text, including headings. The Text Block Editor bar is the small black bar that pops up above the editing area of a text block.

Squarespace offers very few options for styling text. This can feel constraining but ensures consistency which in turn promotes clarity and a sense of trust on the part of the user.

Headings

  • Heading 1 is reserved for page titles
    • Do not use Heading 1 (H1) in the body of a page, blog post, or event
    • Squarespace uses H1 for event and blog post titles but never mind that :)
  • Heading 2 is the top level for sections inside the body of a page, followed by Heading 3
  • Consistency with this helps search engines and plain text readers understand the hierarchy of content on the page
  • To create a heading, highlight the text and select the appropriate heading from the small "Format" drop-down in the Text Block Editor bar
  • For consistency, please do not add italics or bold to Headings

Bulleted Lists

The best way to set up a bulleted or numbered list is to style the text using the appropriate list option in the Text Block Editor bar. This will give consistent bullets and indentation where copy/paste operations will not.

Note: Long lists with multiple levels can be a little buggy/fussy to get working right. But it's usually worth the trouble. Also, you can mix numbered and bulleted lists, but have to be careful.

Quotes

There are two ways to create quotes:

  1. Inserting a Quote Content Block
    • This gives the quote special formatting: brown font, background color, l/r indentation, and a citation line
  2. Selecting Quote from the Text Block Editor bar
    • This simply indents the text (l/r) and puts it in italics
This is a quote created using the Quote Content Block. It works nicely for quotes you want to stand out from the rest of the content on a page. Or in blog posts, for quotations from other articles.

Notes

To create a note, use the "Code" option from the Format drop-down menu in the Text Block Editor bar. It will look strange and broken from the backend — a fixed width font at the full size — but from the front, it will give you a small sans serif font.

Note: Here is an example of the note formatting using the Code format option.
