Honouring Mahapajapati, our first woman ancestor

  • Mountain Rain Zen Community 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, B.C. Canada (map)

The Buddha-to-be, Siddartha Gautama was raised from infancy by his aunt and step-mother, Mahapajapati. She led what may have been the first women’s march of 500 women to appeal to the Buddha to be accepted into the sangha. With the Buddha’s attendant, Ananda, as ally, she succeeded. We will commemorate her courage and determination, marking International Women’s Day by re-telling her story and doing a ceremony of gratitude.

Tea and refreshments to follow. Volunteer/s needed. Please contact teachers@mountainrainzen.org if you can contribute.

Part of our usual Sunday morning practice schedule.
