The Power of Vow: Wednesday evening dharma seminar with Shinmon Michael Newton

  • Mountain Rain Zen Community 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, B.C. Canada (map)

At the beginning of a new year many of us make resolutions or aspirations for our lives.  When we don’t follow them or live up to our own expectations a sense of failure arises. Traditional Buddhist practice does not focus on resolutions, but on vows, deep commitments that will take many years if not a lifetime to complete. In the Buddhist tradition, vowing is seen as a spiritual path, a heroic path, but not a smooth path.  In this dharma seminar we will explore how vows function in Buddhist practice and how they can support us for the long haul through life's greatest challenges.

For this seminar we will be loosely following The Vow-Powered Life: A Simple Method for Living with Purpose by Jan Chozen Bays. Reading the book is recommended but not required.

Wednesday evening schedule: 7:00 zazen, 7:25 kinhin, 7:35 zazen 8:00 informal talk followed by group talking circle.

Part of our regular Wednesday evening practice schedule. Everyone welcome. By donation.
